Internal Boeing survey hints at a culture of rushing through aircraft safety features in the years before 2 fatal 737 Max crashes
An internal Boeing survey, conducted in November 2016, found that 29% of engineers felt pressure from managers to certify plane systems they designed themselves, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. It suggests an atmosphere of rushing through the design and certification process. The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure is currently studying this report, according to the Journal. The report comes as internal Boeing messages suggest the company misled the Federal Aviation Administration about the 737 Max’s safety features. The 2016 survey found that some 29% engineers felt pressure from their managers to certify for the Federal Aviation Administration plane systems that they had designed themselves, reported the Journal’s Andrew Tangel and Andy Pasztor, who reviewed the survey. The survey also highlighted the dangers of having Boeing employees develop as well as certify their own work, noting that “conflict can occur” in times like this, the Journal added. Workload and schedule were cited as major causes for the stress. The House probe came after two deadly crashes that killed a total of 346 people within five months of each other.
